Kiwanis Club of Historic St. Augustine

Newsletter – 4 May 2006

President’s Message:

Scholarship Awards will be handed to the winners on 11 May to Pedro Menendez, and 17 May to St. Joseph’s.  This is the culmination of many hours of hard work, and the club is grateful to the Committee members and all who helped. (Raising money to pay the scholarships is helping, you know.)

Lou Nester is chaired the Nominating Committee, and with only a little begging announced the slate offered by the Committee: Vice President-Dave Thompson; Board Members-Jake Thompson, Bob Corson, and Lou Nester. Thanks to one and all who agreed to serve, and we will vote on this list and will, of course, take nominations from the floor. Thanks Lou, for chairing the committee.

We had a Board meeting on Monday. We learned that we were still solvent and that the club has 39 members. Lt. Gov. Bill Montgomery plans to be here on the 11th when we have our membership drive. If we pick up a couple of new members, we will be the largest club in the Division. As mentioned before, we can induct women into the club. Men or women are O.K. as long as they meet the requirements for membership. We are planning a raffle in conjunction with The Allegro antique car show, and we are also planning a Pancake Breakfast in the early fall after we do the Peanut Day. We have a busy time ahead of us, but then that’s what we are supposed to do.

Coming Events: [Advise the editor of events of interest at 797-4332]

5 & 6 May 2006: From 5pm until noon on the 6th our Key Club will be involved in Relay for Life. This will be held at the SAHS track. We are providing tents and food (lobster and filet mignon) so stop by on your way home from the Art Walk.

11 May 2006: Bring-a-Guest Day –Bob Braden’s idea to help stimulate membership. Bring a prospective member so that more people in the community will know what Kiwanis is all about—and possibly join our curious crue.

12 May 2006: Dave Thompson announced that the Navy League would be celebrating Navy Day with a tour of ships at Mayport. Dave has graciously offered to give any of our members a personal tour and introduce you to all the men and women you meet there.

2 June 2006: First Friday Art Walk, check out the local galleries and taste the food and wine.

5 June 2006: Regular monthly board meeting to be held at The Allegro. The meeting will start at 1700 hours. There is much to discuss, so be prompt and be prepared to share some ideas.

Guests: No guests last week. Remember to bring plenty next week.

Programs: (Check the website for your speaker assignment date.)

LAST WEEK: Wayne Howell introduced Dr. Paul Linser from the Whitney Labs at Marineland. This is a research lab for marine biology. As he pointed out, from the outside it looks very rough, but inside it is state of the art. The lab has been there for 32 years, so those buildings got a good look at those Sea Hunt girls back in the day. (No, come to think of it, that may have been before their time.) At any rate, they are going through a complete rebuilding program which is geared to be completed in a few years. The good doctor is also a guitar player and talked up the Gamble Rogers Folk Festival which will be this weekend. (Bob Braden is giving away free beer to all members that show up at his concession.)

THIS WEEK: Our own Dennis Hollingsworth has the program.

NEXT WEEK: Our Human & Spiritual Aims meeting and our final program for Student of the Month for this school year.

⅓-⅓-⅓ DRAWING WINNERS: Jake Thompson and Bob Braden were the winners. Congrats and mix those tickets up better next time. Buy your tickets early and often.

Late Breaking News:

Don’t forget that OUR Key Club is involved with the Relay for Life. We have help in a material way, but they would like a little moral support. So if you have a chance, get by the track at SAHS and you’ll find our guys in the homicide tent. They may even have a hamburger left over to share. (I wouldn’t count on that, however. Eat before you go.) Seriously, get there if you can and let them know we’re thinking of them.

Read a truly good article on Tuesday, and recommend that one and all get it by going to www.opinionjournal.com and look for the article by Shelby Steele dealing with white guilt and how it has hamstrung us in the world. (By the by, Shelby Steele is black.)

Quote(s) of the Week:
"The said constitution shall never be construed to authorize Congress to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms." —Samuel Adams

"Parliament is not a congress of ambassadors from different and hostile interests; which interests each must maintain, as an agent and advocate, against other agents and advocates; but parliament is a deliberative assembly of one nation, with one interest, that of the whole; where, not local purposes, not local prejudices ought to guide, but the general good, resulting from the general reason of the whole. You choose a member indeed; but when you have chosen him, he is not a member of Bristol, but he is a member of parliament." —William Burke

"No sooner do we believe that God loves us than there is an impulse to believe that He does so, not because He is Love, but because we are intrinsically lovable. The Pagans obeyed this impulse unabashed; a good man was 'dear to the gods' because he was good. We, being better taught, resort to subterfuge. Far be it from us to think that we have virtues for which God could love us. But then, how magnificently we have repented. As Bunyan says, describing his first and illusory conversation, 'I thought there was no man in England that pleased God better than I'." —C. S. Lewis

"In the end, it all comes down to leadership. That is what this country is looking for now. It was leadership here at home that gave us strong American influence abroad and the collapse of imperial Communism. Great nations have responsibilities to lead, and we should always be cautious of those who would lower our profile because they might just wind up lowering our flag." —Ronald Reagan
