President’s Message:

The Division Council meeting was last Thursday night at the JU campus. The District Gov. and her husband were not there, so we got in and out at a reasonable hour. Bob Braden, Tim Chiu, Richard Welty, and I went and it was a good meeting. It appears that Peanut Day is the next big project and I think all the clubs in the Division are on board.

Thanks one and all for the outpouring of concern for me after my cycle accident last Wednesday evening. I missed the meeting and recuperated quickly. For those who have ridden bikes before, you know it is touch and go when you have to lay one down. Thanks especially to Chief Hedges who, I understand, covered for me very well.

The monthly Board meeting was last Monday evening, and it was well attended. We discussed some of our thoughts on Peanut Day and we also discussed on ongoing project regarding a Pancake Breakfast. We paid our Division dues, made a contribution to the Florida Foundation, and also made our contribution to the International Foundation. Lou indicated that his YCPO project will need some help in about two months. It was decided NOT to invite any of the candidates running for City Commission to speak at our club, but that an invitation should be tendered to all candidates for contested County offices.

Late Breaking News:

FLORIDA DISTRICT CONVENTION--Please mark your calendars for August 24-27. All new members, seasoned members, officers and Board members should plan to attend this annual event for Florida Kiwanians.  For those who have been to past Florida conventions, you'll agree that these conventions include a lot of great workshops, speakers, and our election of October 1st District officers--and there is still time for fun, so bring your families. Our club secretary will be getting info on the Convention frequently; and it will be in your Florida Kiwanis magazines--or go to www.Floridakiwanis.com.  Do yourselves a favor and plan to go! Also received an e-mail from Lt. Gov. Bill this week saying if you are going you’d better get your reservations in NOW!

I know that it is getting warmer and summer is almost here, but don’t get complacent, because we are working on a couple of more projects and we will need you be raring to go. Peanut Day is a Division-wide endeavor that we will be involved with this year.

The Heat and the Mavericks are in the finals of the NBA tournament. I understand that this year’s effort has been better than many in the recent past. Michelle Wie missed the cut and will not get to play with the boys. Boo Hoo! Her life is over; she may as well hang it up. And the Yankees, as beat up as they are, put a thrashing on my Bosox Monday. Speaking of baseball, my Seminoles won’t be going to the College World Series. (Now that does deserve a Boo Hoo.)

Former member, Sam Dee Thomas’, wife suffered a stroke recently and was hospitalized and it was decided to move her to Bayview. In the paperwork shuffle at the hospital, they reported her as dead and now there is a big mess. Sammy, let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

"What about those British and American soldiers who gave their limbs and lives for the freedom of others? Are such lives worth so little that we believe we can quit before the task is done? Do we think that by leaving now before the Iraqis are fully capable of repelling the terrorist insurgents we will have done ourselves—or Iraq—a favor? Are we so self-deceived that we think they won't come after us should we stop going after them?" —Cal Thomas

"The question we all must answer is whether, like our parent's and grandparent's generation, we have the patience to wage a long war against an ideological enemy as evil as the former Soviet Union?" —Alan Caruba

If [Democrats] are competent to fight this war, then I ought to be singing on American Idol." —Vice President Dick Cheney

"For most of the three years of the Iraq war, the Democrats have been trying to beat something with nothing. Lately, they have been reduced to a fate even worse: trying to beat something with [John] Murtha." —Rich Lowry
