Kiwanis Club of Historic St. Augustine

Newsletter – 12 October 2006

President’s Message:

Pancake Breakfast, Pancake Breakfast, Pancake Breakfast! I am pleased to announce that we made over $5,000 on this fundraiser. What a great start to an annual event that can only go up! I guesstimated that we might make $6K on this, so I wasn’t too far off. Actually, we have to wait until our traveling Treasurer returns to determine the exact amount of money that was made. Again, my thanks go out to one and all those who participated and helped to make this a success, especially the staff and residents of The Allegro.

The Board met last Monday and discussed several things. The Peanut Day will be 13 January 2007, and we will be able to have the Publix at the beach. Two other fundraisers were discussed: (1) The Village Inn has a coupon that is sold so that the buyer can get one of their great pies. (b) The sale of the Kiwanis Christmas ornaments that are of the St. Augustine Lighthouse. Both of these will be discussed and decided by the membership, all the more reason to attend this Thursday’s meeting. We have decided to have the Board meeting on the first Thursday of each month, after the regular meeting. Come and sit with your committee, and discuss the work of your committee. Then we will adjourn the meeting and call the Board meeting and go through our regular agenda. I am determined to get the committee system working in this club, as that is the sign of a really strong club. I have asked that the committee assignments be forwarded to each member with this newsletter and they will be posted on our website as well as be available at the meetings.

Late Breaking News:

The Gators are now the only SEC team that is undefeated, and they are ranked #2 in the polls. Keep this up and they will be playing for the national championship. And what has happened to the Seminoles? They look as if they are playing offense with a 5 second delay. I think it is time to bench Wetherford, just to wake him up.

The Jags looked like something else. They manhandled the Jets, and the only problem that I see is that they lost two of their better defensive players to injury.

On the local level, the battle of the titans was a whale of a game. SAHS lost to Nease, and there appears to be one confirmed bad call. I still think the “fumble” with less than 6 minutes to play was no catch, just incomplete

Baseball is back in the news, and can you believe those Yankees? They imploded as no one would have guessed. Old George will making some changes, of that there is no doubt. Evidently not Joe Torre, as it was just announced that he will be staying. It showed one thing for sure; that money can’t always buy success. Detroit should win it just on emotion.

Lou Nestor reported on his son-in-law. Evidently he not suffering from pure ALS but has similar symptoms. Evidently he has some metal contamination of his blood which was aggravated by his job as a welder. Lou is hopeful and our prayers go out to Kenny Goodall, his son-in-law.

Quote(s) of the Week:
"Our national existence, our very survival as a People and as Americans are preeminent. It is the task of true leadership to understand that and to do what is necessary... Conservatives are correct to insist on the sanctity of the Constitution and on the grave importance of fidelity to its plain language. But they must not forget that we Americans came together to fight for our independence and to form a more perfect union before the Constitution was actually written or ratified. The Divine blessing bestowed upon the American People to become a People was not dependent on that document. There was something more; something quite divine. The Constitution made that blessing a political reality and that is why it deserves our unending reverence and faithfulness." —David Yerushalmi, Institute for Advanced Strategic and Political Studies

"There is no doubt that the government of this former republic is growing ever more tyrannical. The question remains: When, if ever, will there again arise a breed of patriots willing to step up to the plate?" —Lyn Nofziger, "North Star" of the Reagan Revolution

"Only mediocrity can be trusted to be always at its best." —Sir Max Beerbohm

"Waste not fresh tears over old griefs." —Euripides

"Whatever you may be sure of, be sure of this: That you are dreadfully like other people." —James Russell Lowell

"It seems now that the place where you see the most obvious censorship is on college campuses—the precise place where you would expect to see the least." —Alan Charles Kors
