President’s
Message:
I began last week by passing
around the sign-up sheet for the volunteers to ring the bell for the local
Salvation Army. We have an excellent location again this year. Sign up and fill
any empty times that may still be vacant. A good cause, and if it isn’t too
cold, you get to chat up a lot of people.
David
Thompson, Bob Braden, Richard Welty, Tim Chiu, and yours truly attended the
Division 5 Council meeting last Thursday evening at Deer Creek Country Club.
They put on a good meeting, good food, and Lt. Gov. Rande did a good job of running a tight meeting. That certainly
helps to get people to the meeting if they know they will get out in a
reasonable time.
Last week I passed out the ornaments that had been
ordered by club members. If you haven’t already, get your money into the
Treasurer ASAP. If you ordered some and haven’t
received yours yet, let me know.
Lou Nester handed
out the Boy Scout health food that many of us ordered. Get your money to Lou
and pick up your health food.

LAST WEEK:
Rudy Xue introduced Mary Willis, a long-time member of the
Anastasia Mosquito Control Board, who is retiring this year. The woman knew 70%
of the people in the room and has been involved with the Board for 20 years and
was in the school system for even more years. She gave an interesting history
of the Board which began in 1948 with three members, and she pointed out that
the millage has been reduced since that time. Of course, the value of property
and the number of buildings has increased greatly since that year. Another
interesting fact that was mentioned was that

I guess we need to decide PDQ
if we are going to take up a collection, buy from club funds, or assign each
member to go out and buy something. That should be done this meeting.
Quote(s) of the Week:
“If we move in mass, be it ever so circuitously,
we shall attain our object; but if we break into squads, everyone pursuing the
path he thinks most direct, we become an easy conquest to those who can now barely
hold us in check.” —Thomas Jefferson
“If you do not specify and confront real
issues, what you will do will surely obscure them. If you do not alarm anyone
morally, you will yourself remain morally asleep. If you do not embody
controversy, what you say will be an acceptance of the drift to the coming
human hell.” —C. Wright Mills
“The welfare of the people in particular has always been the alibi of tyrants,
and it provides the further advantage of giving the servants of tyranny a good
conscience.” —Albert Camus
