Newsletter – 1 March 2007

President’s Message:

Bob Braden explained that he submits our monthly report by e-mail, but that we were not getting full credit, because the individual committee reports were not going into the District, so we were not getting credit for all of our work. He requested that all chairs of the committees go on-line and submit their monthly reports on-line so that we would get full credit for the work that we do. If there is a question or problem about this, call Bob.

Don’t forget the Mid-Year Conference in Lake City at the end of March. Please note in the masthead, that we are into March as you read this. The club will pay the registration fee for those members that wish to attend. I believe we have some going to that event as well.

The Geography Bee is fast approaching. This is a fun event, the teachers there do most of the work, and we all learn something new. A good time is had by all! Plan to volunteer to help and show up on the 22nd.

Coming Events: [Advise the editor of events of interest at 797-4332]

2 March 2007: First Friday Art Walk, check out the local galleries downtown and taste their food and wine.

3 March 2007: Uptown Saturday Night, check out the local galleries uptown on the first Saturday of each month, and taste their food and wine.

22 March 2007: Our annual Geography Bee. Again this year it will be held at Sebastian Middle School. Always a great time had by all. Plan to spend the early evening with your fellow members, and Bob will be getting us to fill jobs too.

March 30 - April 1, 2007: The North Midyear Conference for divisions 1-15 to be held in Lake City in conjunction with the Hog Wild Pig Crazy Barbeque festival. See our website for details.

Guests: Back for another visit with our club and our fair city is Harry Matteson, escaping all that white stuff in upstate New York. He’ll be here for a while; it takes time for that stuff to melt. Lenore Welty was back and turned in her application for membership. Jim Dale had his college roommate as a guest, Jerry Bailey. Last, but by no means least, Mark Shelley had as his guest for the second time, Jim Mathisen. Welcome to one and all.

Programs: (Check the website for your speaker assignment date.)

LAST WEEK: We couldn’t rally a speaker, but we had enough other business to make it an interesting meeting. We learned that we should have an Interclub, because Tim wants to go. We also learned that we are moving forward on the concept of a 501(c)(3) foundation for our club.

THIS WEEK: Our monthly meeting of committees and the Board Meeting.

NEXT WEEK:  Human and Spiritual Values meeting along with our Student of the Month.

⅓-⅓-⅓ DRAWING WINNERS: The winning tickets were drawn and the winners were Jerry Saia and Bob Braden. Congrats to both. Remember to mix those tickets well (put mine on top), and to buy your tickets early and often.

Late Breaking News:

We are fast approaching the start of March Madness, and Florida has slipped from #1 to #5. The top spot was taken by none other than Ohio State. What is this, déjà vu all over again? As they say, “We shall see.”

Is it me, or have things changed and I just haven’t kept up? Two Border Patrol agents are in prison for shooting AT a fleeing illegal alien felon who was attempting to bring a large quantity of drugs into this country. The crook is not dead, in fact, he was given immunity to come back and testify against the agents. So the crook is given immunity for the crime he committed while the agents are convicted and sent to prison. They aren’t even allowed out on bond while their sentence is appealed. Now I know that there must be more to this story than meets the eye, but what is this?

In a related story there is a new documentary film released recently that documents that Mexican militia are shooting at people on our side of the border, even crossing the border to fire at our citizens, and the government appears to do nothing. When Poncho Villa came across the border back in the early 20th century, we sent an army unit after him.

Lastly, Scooter Libby is on trial… for what? I would understand if this woman had been a covert agent for the CIA, but clearly she was not. And why did the CIA send her husband on this mission without him signing the normal confidentiality agreement? As the Mad Hatter said, “Things just get curiouser and curiouser.”

Quote(s) of the Week:
America’s present problems are many and varied, but we seem not to have been gripped by the same sense of purpose that drove Ronald Reagan in his quest to bring the Cold War to a peaceful conclusion.” —Richard Allen

“We have been imposed on so often that it is understandable how some would think that we had reached the point where we would stand for anything.” —Thomas Sowell

“Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil.” —Doug Patton

“It is losing that Americans have no patience for—not casualties or a protracted war. Let Bush make it clear that he is serious about victory, and that he will do whatever it takes to achieve it. The political support he needs will follow.” —Jeff Jacoby

“Very hardheaded realist terms: interest, stability, regional powers. But stringing them together to suggest that Iran and Syria share our interests in stability is the height of fantasy. In fact, Iran and Syria have an overriding interest in chaos in Iraq—which is precisely why they each have been abetting the insurgency and fanning civil war. Perhaps in some long-term future they will want a stable Iraq as a tame client state of the Syria-Iran axis. For now they want chaos. What in God’s name will a negotiation with them yield?” —Charles Krauthammer

If you’re one of those dummies who goofs off in school, you wind up in Iraq. But, if you’re sophisticated and nuanced, you wind up on a commission about Iraq.” —Mark Steyn
