Kiwanis Club of Historic St. Augustine

Newsletter – 11 October 2007

President’s Message:

The Hillsboro Inlet Light is the new Christmas ornament/fundraiser for Kiwanis this year. Order them while supplies last. This light was first built in Chicago and was on exhibit at the Chicago Exhibition. Later, is was dismantled and moved to its present location. (This is similar to the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It was to be dismantled after an exhibition, and it was not. The rest, as they say, is history.) The club voted to make one order, so if you want some for yourself or for gifts, let me know.

There was a discussion concerning T shirts for the club. Something about changing the color because most of our shirts were looking a little dingy. I understand that someone was going to bring us some color choices so that we could make a decision.

We are still awaiting the final numbers for the Pancake Breakfast. Last week we had about $1K brought in and we were still looking for those stragglers bringing in the balance of the money. It is looking very good, however, and we definitely improved on last year’s total.

Coming Events: [Advise the editor of events of interest at 797-4332]

27 October 2007: Uptown Saturday Night, check out the local galleries uptown on the last Saturday of each month, and taste their food and wine.

3 November 2007: First Friday Art Walk, check out the local galleries downtown and taste their food and wine.

13 November 2007: The first Division Council Meeting (DCM) for this year will be held here in St. Augustine. This is also the official visit for our new District Governor, Mark Taylor. It will be held at Amici’s Restaurant, corner of S A1A and SR 312. Cash bar at 1800 hours and dinner will be served at 1900 hours. Let’s make sure we have a huge turnout.

Guests: We had a number of guests at the banquet; the married folk had their spouses, and John and Dave Thompson had other guests with them. I understand that at least one of those guests wants to join our motley crew.

Programs: (Check the website for your speaker assignment date.)

LAST WEEK: Committee and Board Meeting

THIS WEEK: Human & Spiritual Values meeting and Student of the Month.

NEXT WEEK: We are going back to the last date on last year’s schedule, and Lou Nester, who had a speaker lined up will recall that person for next week.

50/50 DRAWING WINNERS: This week’s winner was Mark Shelley, who also helped coach another tremendous football game, even if they did have to pray.

Late Breaking News:

In sports, the Gators lost to LSU in a truly close game. Well played. This gives Urban Meyer his first two game losing streak since he coached at Bowling Green. Wow! I’ll bet he never thought that would happen with the talent he has on this Florida team. But then you read the paper and it seems that Tebow had to get a new cell phone because of all the crank calls he was receiving. My first comment to that story was that it sounded like the typical Florida response to losing a game. Then the paper indicated that many of the calls came from LSU. (Note I said “many” and not “all”) Bobby and the Seminoles won another one Saturday. Another good game to watch and it appears that FSU has picked a new QB. As a friend of mine said at my Toastmaster meeting, “Are we seeing the reincarnation of Charlie Ward?” One can only hope.

Then we have baseball and the play-offs to keep up with. The Bosox won their series (a sweep actually) and the Yanks went out in four to the Indians. So Boston and Cleveland will begin their best of seven series in Boston on Friday night. In the National League, Arizona and Colorado begin their best of seven series Thursday night. So we can say for that two of those four teams will play in the World Series. These should be some good play-off games, and will keep you busy waiting for the next football game to come on the air. I didn’t watch too much of the National League games, but I can tell you that Cleveland has some strong pitching, and the Red Sox have a strong team – period. Having once been a resident of Ohio and remembering the Indians of the early 1950s, I am really torn because I am a Red Sox fan. However, I will survive.
