Kiwanis Club of Historic St. Augustine

Newsletter – 8 November 2007

President’s Message:

We are still awaiting the final numbers for the Pancake Breakfast. We know that we did well, but we need the stragglers to get the funds in so we can get a total picture. We know tentatively that it is over $7K. If you haven’t done so, get your money into the club now. This event was over a month ago.

The club approved the participation in the annual Veteran’s Day ceremony. Mark you calendar, and remember that it will be on SUNDAY, 11 November. We were called and they request that we send a representative to a rehearsal at 1630 hours on Friday. Evidently this year there will be another side of the Fort used, and they want to make sure everyone knows where to walk.

While thinking of fund raisers, Skeeter is promoting a volley ball tournament to be held at the beach in the Spring. He is a very busy man these days, so he will be asking for help. Step up to the plate when he asks you for help. This could be another good source of revenue.

Coming Events: [Advise the editor of events of interest at 797-4332]

11 November 2007: Our club will participate in the Massing of the Colors and celebration of Veterans Day. This will be held at The Fort, and participants need to get there at 9:15 to find our place and get out the equipment. The ceremony begins at 10:00am. This is a Sunday, so don’t forget it.

13 November 2007: The first Division Council Meeting (DCM) for this year will be held here in St. Augustine. This is also the official visit for our new District Governor, Mark Taylor. It will be held at Amici’s Restaurant, corner of S A1A and SR 312. Cash bar at 1800 hours and dinner will be served at 1900 hours. Let’s make sure we have a huge turnout.

24 November 2007: Uptown Saturday Night, check out the local galleries uptown on the last Saturday of each month, and taste their food and wine.

7 December 2007: First Friday Art Walk, check out the local galleries downtown and taste their food and wine.

Guests: No guests last week. Let’s get busy.

Programs: (Check the website for your speaker assignment date.)

LAST WEEK: Our monthly committee and Board meetings

THIS WEEK: The second week of the month is always our Human and Spiritual Values meeting, and during the school year we also honor our Student of the Month. My notes reflect that the student to be honored will be from Bartram Trail HS.

NEXT WEEK: Our very own Wayne Howell, not some else’s, has the program, and told be he was on it.

50/50 DRAWING WINNERS: This week’s winner was Dave Thompson. I’m not sure if he was holding Mark’s ticket, or if it was his own. I heard some conflicting rumors from that area of the room.

Late Breaking News:

In case you missed it, the Gators defeated Vandy. The only way you would have missed it was (a) not be a reader of The Record, or (b) you don’t watch local sports reports. The only way you would know that the Noles beat the #2 team in the nation, Boston College, was to have watched a great game that lasted late, or you happened to find the story buried on page 39 of The Record’s sports section. Both teams have lost three games, but there is a disparity of reporting after all these years. Another Florida team, Central Florida, has dropped down considerably in the rankings. They looked there for a while as if they were going to kick butt.

In the NFL, we had the meeting of two undefeated teams on Sunday evening. Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, two of the premier quarterbacks today, met to decide which would remain unbeaten. This was a very good game, but at the end, it was the New England Patriots who came out on top. Both teams were playing without their best lineup. I would have loved to see this game in the first week when everyone was healthy.

In the Board meeting last week: (1) we officially approved sponsoring the new Key Club, approved the stipend for the advisor, and an expense account equal to our other club at St. Joe’s; (2) assigned Charlie Stevens’ committee with the task of getting an assignment from Salvation Army, and to find our needy family for the holidays; and (3) we donated money in memory of our late member, Fran Ferrell.

Notice was sent to members to get a head-count as to how many of us will be going to the DCM that will be held here in St. Augustine on 13 November. So far I have six that have confirmed. We need to let the noon club know a count, so get back to me ASAP if you are going to attend.

Quote(s) of the Week:
“Destroying a president is not much of a strategy to win a war, but it’s all the Democrats have. The churls of the left don’t seem to care whether their country wins the war, the important thing is to ‘keep hate alive.’ If hate worked in ‘06, maybe it will work again in ‘08, when the stakes will be considerably higher. Sometimes it’s not only hate, but a bit of schadenfreude, too, taking pleasure in the woes of the enemy. ‘Partisan pleasure in George Bush’s pain dates to the anguish of the contested 2000 election loss,’ observes Daniel Henninger in the Wall Street Journal. ‘The Democrats have run against something called ‘Bush’ for so long this sentiment is now bound up in any act or policy remotely attached to the president. Iraq’s troubles, or Iran or North Korea, are merely an artifact of crushing this one guy.’ The president’s tormentors in Congress, some old and some new, insist they don’t have anything against the fine young Americans with their lives on the line in Iraq, but the troops are dispensable to the larger partisan goal of destroying George W. and abdicating the responsibility that comes with being the world’s only superpower. If the troops are hurt, too, well, that’s just a risk the critics will have to endure.” —Wesley Pruden

“His Example is now complete, and it will teach wisdom and virtue to magistrates, citizens, and men, not only in the present age, but in future generations, as long as our history shall be read.” —John Adams on George Washington

“Speak when you are angry, and you will make the best speech you will ever regret.” —Ambrose Bierce
