Kiwanis Club of Historic St. Augustine

Newsletter – 15 November 2007

President’s Message:

It has been a busy week in Kiwanis world. Sunday morning Nick Panepinto, Richard Welty, and I represented the club at the Veterans Day celebration held at the Fort. We know another member of our club was present, namely Ray Quinn. He did not join in the marching, as he was the Master of Ceremonies. There was a good crowd in attendance, especially when you remember that this was a Sunday, but we were so far from the spectators that we could not see if any other members of the club were present. We also loaned them our club’s bell so that they could acknowledge the veterans and service people that had passed away since Memorial Day. Plan to attend the Memorial Day ceremony in May.

On Tuesday, 13 November, 10 of us attended the Division 5 Council meeting. (Besides myself, Bob Braden, Nick Panepinto, Frank Nemec, Richard Welty, Paul Linser, Dave Thompson, Jean Thomas, Art Runk, and sitting at my table, Karin Coleman). This event was held here at Amici’s and the noon club was the sponsor. This was also the Governor’s visit, and Governor Mark Taylor and his wife, Sharon, were in attendance. The meeting was run very smoothly. The Governor is very low key, and very unpretentious. The goal is to have a Kiwanis presence in every school through K-Kids, Builders Clubs, Key Clubs, etc. His wife has taken on as a project for us to get involved with the Guardian ad Litem Program. This is a volunteer group that speaks for children in domestic cases in court. She encouraged having a speaker come to our club, and then having members volunteer.

While thinking of fund raisers, Skeeter is promoting a volley ball tournament to be held at the beach in the Spring. He is a very busy man these days, so he will be asking for help. Step up to the plate when he asks you for help. This could be another good source of revenue.

Programs: (Check the website for your speaker assignment date.)

LAST WEEK: The student of the month was Phillip Skelley, who was introduced by the principal of Bartram Tail, Mr. Asplain. Phillip was accompanied by his proud parents. The one thing I heard that really stuck in my mind, Phillip was president of The Young Republicans. Also on tap was Doug Scott, who is Skeeter’s brother-in-law, who is a pastor in Jacksonville. He introduced an associate pastor, Tommy Mallard, who gave a very interesting presentation on goals, and how they can and should come from a spiritual basis. I had heard the Bible used before in discussion of goals, but not as complete as this discussion. Very good job.

THIS WEEK: Our very own Wayne Howell, not some else’s, has the program, and he told me he was on it.

NEXT WEEK: There will be no meeting because of Thanksgiving, but as a “heads-up” Karin Coleman has the speaker assignment for the 29th.

50/50 DRAWING WINNERS: This week’s winner was Charlie Stevens. Mix those tickets up real good this time, and get mine on top.

Late Breaking News:

Skeeter brought to our attention that the cold weather was coming and that he had talked with the director of St. Francis House, and she requested that anyone with warm clothing that was no longer needed to please think of donating same to St. Francis House.

Also this from Skeeter. Kappa Delta Pi, the Flagler Education honor society is beginning a drive to fund a scholarship in honor of our late member, Fran Farrell. Our club made a small donation last month but this month Chick-Fil-A is helping the cause. Patronize the local store on Thursday, November 15 between 6 and 8pm and they will donate a portion of the proceeds to the group. You can eat-in or drive thru, every thing helps. So after having breakfast at Village Inn, plan to take your significant other to Chick-Fil-A for dinner. It will cost you less than Ruth’s Chris Steak House, and the cows will love you for eating more chicken.

We aren’t going into a lot about football this week, but I will mention that our ex-Prez, Nick Panepinto, is worried about the Notre Dame – Duke Game. Whoda thunk that Notre Dame would be worried about Duke? It seems incredible, but The Irish are definitely in a rebuilding year (maybe two). Best of luck, Nick!

Quote(s) of the Week:
Here is another recall of Chinese merchandise:

(Thanks to our alert consumer advisor, Bob Corson, for bringing it to my attention. We endeavor to get the word out to you as soon as humanly possible.)

And these gems are from Ronald Reagan:

* Here’s my strategy on war: We win, they lose.

* The most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m here from the government and I’m here to help.

* The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant: It’s just that they know so much that isn’t so.

* Of the four wars in my lifetime none came about because the U.S. was too strong.
