President’s Message:

I certainly hope that each and every one of you and your families had a very happy Thanksgiving. By now you should be able to put more food away, and I think the best place to do that on a Thursday morning is to get to the meeting and have a nice breakfast.

Skeeter and I discussed the volleyball tournament last meeting. I have tentatively reserved the Pavilion at the beach and at least 3 of the 5 courts for April 5th with the possibility of getting April 19th. I believe April 5th is the day we are supposed to be at the ball bark for the Kiwanis Day at the Park.

There is a requirement that we have $1 million in general liability insurance and if we serve beer we need $1 million in liquor liability insurance with St. Johns County as secondary to both policies. There is a $106 fee for the Pavilion. We thought that if we go forward with the event that we would invite all local clubs and local businesses to participate with a team of four, with at least one being female ($100 per team). Please be prepared to discuss this at the December board meeting. You can view additional information about the Pavilion at www.sjcfl.gov. Go to Parks then go to Pavilion.

Speaking of Skeeter, he has always been instrumental in finding the family for us to adopt for the Christmas holidays. (He and Ray Quinn mostly.) At any rate, this year he has found a family and the kids attend Webster. Here are the stats:

Girl - 8 years old/wears a size 10
Boy - 6 years old/wears a size 5
Boy 7 - years old/wears a size 5 also.

We don’t have a lot of time, so let’s make a decision on this ASAP.

Coming Events: [Advise the editor of events of interest at 797-4332]

24 November 2007: Uptown Saturday Night, check out the local galleries uptown on the last Saturday of each month, and taste their food and wine.

7 December 2007: First Friday Art Walk, check out the local galleries downtown and taste their food and wine.

8 December 2007: Fashion Show sponsored by St. Garrard House at The World Golf Village

5 April 2008: Our First Annual Volleyball Tournament to be held on the beach at the Pavilion. Details as they come in. Just mark your calendar.

Guests: Judy Mazes graced us with her presence. We are hoping to have her become our newest member. She is the director at The Allegro, which has been so helpful to us in the past.

Programs: (Check the website for your speaker assignment date.)

LAST WEEK: Of course last week we had no meeting because of Thanksgiving, but the week before, Wayne Howell had as our speaker, Teresa Andrews, the director of community service for EPIC. She gave us an update. They are certainly a busy organization what with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Drug Abuse Counseling, a mentoring program, and they handle the folks sent over from Drug Court.

THIS WEEK: Karin Coleman has the speaker assignment for the last meeting day in November.

NEXT WEEK: This is our regular meeting for committees and the Board Meeting. Make sure to be here, as we have much business to take care of.

50/50 DRAWING WINNERS: Last winner was Skeeter. Mix those tickets up real good this time, and get mine on top.

Late Breaking News:

Skeeter brought to our attention that the cold weather was coming and that he had talked with the director of St. Francis House, and she requested that anyone with warm clothing that was no longer needed to please think of donating same to St. Francis House.

As you know, we had pledged to give a total of $10,000 to help with the construction of the new Boys and Girls Club building. We (read Dave Thompson) put in for a grant to Florida Kiwanis Foundation to see if they would help in this endeavor and they did indeed give a grant of $5,000. At Thursday’s (today’s) meeting we will present the check to the Executive Director, and Dave has procured one of those giant award checks to be used. (Thanks Rachel.) Also to in attendance is our division’s representative to the Florida Foundation, Phil Guillion. So make an extra special effort to get here for this meeting.

We aren’t going into a lot about football this week, but I will mention that Notre Dame did beat Duke. And Florida did beat FSU. I really thought that we would show out better than we did, but that would have meant that “the other FSU team” showed up. Well, there is always next year, and Bobby did just win his 300th game at FSU.
