Newsletter – 16 October 2008
President’s Message:
We did have he booth at the Ponce Mall manned most of the day. Jerry, please turn in the number of hours that were worked. I understand that we may have received at one possible member out of the day, so it was worth that. Also we had two people who indicated that they would be happy to come speak to the club. Richard has those names, so if you need to get a speaker soon, let him know. Thanks to one and all who gave up some time to man the booth, and thanks too to Al Brenan for alerting Jerry to the free booth.
We had a very successful Pancake Breakfast on 20 September. I know we had some money turned in last week, so get your money in ASAP so that Frank can give us the final report. Seriously, let’s get it turned in like yesterday.
We had the drawing for the Jeep on Monday. Come find out who won.
Coming Events: [Advise the editor of events of interest at 797-4332]
25 October 2008: Uptown Saturday Night, check out the local galleries uptown on the last Saturday of each month, and taste their food and wine.
7 November 2008: First Friday Art Walk, check out the local galleries downtown and taste their food and wine.
26 February 2009: Florida District President will visit St. Augustine as part of a Division Council Meeting. Details as they are received.
Guests: Only the speaker and the Student of the Month crowd.
Programs: (Check the website for your speaker assignment date.)
LAST WEEK: We honored the Student of the Month from St. Joseph’s Academy. Her name was Joanna Krywko. (That is a valid name since there is a vowel in it.) She was introduced by one of her instructors who happens to be her step-father, Gary Heiss, and her mother, Patsy, was also present. (See some pictures on the website.) She is one of those top kids who have done everything and still maintain a high grade point average. Congrats to her.
Our speaker was Evelyn Kahrs from the Center for Positive Living. She was there touting Center’s weekend for Peace and Unity which was held this last weekend.
THIS WEEK: We will hear what is happening at Council on Aging. Becky Yanni and Bill Kiernan will do the honors.
NEXT WEEK: I’m not sure who is up for next week, except that it is NOT Bob Corson. He has traded his week with someone, and we’ll make sure Tim knows who to contact.
50/50 DRAWING WINNERS: Last week’s winner was one of our own, John Thompson. That should help to get his attendance back up. Mix those tickets real good, and make sure mine is on top.
NEWS OF NOTE:
Skeeter is coordinating the canned food drive for St. Garrard House. This is an annual event, and we have helped most every year. More details as they happen. In the same vein, we need to be getting our Thanksgiving basket ready and also working on the Christmas help for a family. Again, details to follow.
Rhett mentioned the Limelight Cabaret coming up soon. They could use some folks to volunteer to perform. See Rhett, as I may be announcing this too late.
In sports, my Bosox are taking in on the chin. Just shows what a team that has nothing to lose can do. In the National League, the Phillies have a chance to close out the NLCS and move on to the World Series for the first time in years. And then there are the Cubs. So near and yet so far.
The Gators bounced back and bounced all over LSU. I didn’t watch much of it, but I’ll bet that LSU would have loved to have “Boom-Boom” Cannon back again. They couldn’t run a lot the other night. But then the Jags showed that their running game is alive and well. And the Giants (the Giants) lost their first. Pete Rozell was right when he said on any given day one NFL team could beat another.
Quotes You Can Use (or Not):
“Here’s some perspective you won’t find anywhere else: Mr. Bush has better approval ratings four years after the quick overthrow of Saddam Hussein than Woodrow Wilson, Harry Truman or LBJ did at this point in the wars they launched. Mr. Bush led his nation into a war and was reelected—a feat equaled by only one president in the past hundred years, FDR. Even Mr. Bush’s own father lost a bid for a second term despite leading the country into a war that seemed much more conclusive and successful to public opinion at the time.” —Holman W. Jenkins Jr.
“In stirring up tumult and strife, the worst men can do the most, but peace and quiet cannot be established without virtue.” —Cornelius Tacitus
“Make yourself an honest man, and then you may be sure that there is one less scoundrel in the world.” —Thomas Carlyle
“Principle—particularly moral principle—can never be a weathervane, spinning around this way and that with the shifting winds of expediency. Moral principle is a compass forever fixed and forever true.” —Edward R. Lyman
“If there is one thing upon this earth that mankind love and admire better than another, it is a brave man—it is the man who dares to look the devil in the face and tell him he is a devil.” —James A. Garfield
“The pain inflicted by your country’s indifference is ten-fold that inflicted by your ruthless captors... Debating non-binding resolutions aimed at earning political points only destroys morale, stymies success and emboldens the enemy.” —Rep. Sam Johnson
“What do you suppose was the perspective of the Muslim murderer who went on that shooting spree in Utah? Does he favor concealed carry permits like the one that helped someone kill him? And how about the people who died or had to rely on someone else to defend them from that gun-wielding member of the religion of peace and love, which is otherwise known as Islam? Do they favor concealed carry permits?” —Mike Adams
