Newsletter – 4 December 2008

President’s Message:

I trust that each of you have received my e-mail dealing with the Garage Sale this Saturday at Tim’s hardware store. We didn’t plan this one as well as we should have, but we need to get behind this and make a good sale. We have done these enough in the past that we should be able to handle it. In case you missed it here is what is needed to be done: (1) Man power to pre-arrange and move all sale items; (2) help placing tables; (3) Disposal of all un-sold items; and (4) clean out the office space. I do have Budget Truck available, but need manpower to load and unload all un-sold items. No one leaves until we have Tim’s place cleaned out. We have taken up his valuable space without payment long enough.

Let’s get behind the Christmas family event that we participate in every year. Skeeter has found a needy family and also one that we can support on Thanksgiving..

Coming Events: [Advise the editor of events of interest at 797-4332]

6 December 2008: We will have another Garage Sale at Tim’s store. We promised to get rid of the stuff Tim has been storing and we can use more new old stuff for the sale. Drop it off at Tim’s, but call before you go to make sure he can show you where to put it.

50/50 DRAWING WINNERS: I’m at a loss, because I didn’t write down the winner. All I know is that it was not me. Mix those tickets real good, and make sure mine is on top.

NEWS OF NOTE:

The Christmas family is a single mother with girls 17, 16, & 7. The boys are 11, 7, & 4. Skeeter is coordinating this one.

I was called by the fundraising arm of Special Olympics. Their games will be in February and March. The cost is $145 per athlete. I told her I would bring it up at the meeting today. Her name was Dawn Howell at 800-755-4320, x-2900

This from Chief Hedges: Do any members want to volunteer for Beach Blast Off (New Years Eve Fireworks & Chili Cook Off at the Pier). Shifts are 3p-6p, 6p-9p, or 3p-9p at various locations and you get a free T shirt. All proceeds are going toward the Veterans Memorial Park to be in the park next to the Police Station.          The volunteer coordinator is Verna Brown, (904) 377-2766, vjbrown@bellsouth.net, she is a member of the noon Kiwanis Club, and has some volunteers from her club. Besides being a community event, I believe if we each have at least 4 members it could be counted as an interclub also. Sign-up sheet is going around. Use the back and indicate time you can be there.

Skeeter’s new project is: HATS AND HUGS

The PROJECT IS VERY SIMPLE: Collect hats and hugs and share them with the children in your communities.
                HATS:
‐‐Gather hats of all kinds, decorated or plain, all types for boys and girls. Even have parties to decorate and share your feelings while you are doing the decorating.
                HUGS:
‐‐Gather all types and sizes of stuffed animals and hug them real tight. Have your club members hug them at your meeting. Have your children, grandchildren and sponsored youth give them hugs….this is VERY  important. Now that you have your Hats and Hugs, what do you do with them? All our communities and hospitals have children that need to cover a bald head or just need to feel pretty. Your community might have migrant workers or family shelters where a hat or a hug would feel really good.
Sometimes police officers go into situations where children are caught up in a parental fight and are crying and scared. You can help by providing a “hug” and the child will know they are being hugged by someone who cares.
So what I want you to do is to take my lead and find the needs in your communities. As we provide hats and hugs we will be changing our communities “one child at a time”.
I would like to know how it’s working in your community; send me pictures and numbers of hats and stuffed animals. I want to know how it’s working in your community.
LET’S BE HANDS ON AND SHARE THE LOVE.

Quotes You Can Use (or Not):
“[T]he American people are beginning to fit it all together. They’re beginning to realize that under the leadership of the liberals, that once-proud Democratic Party, a party of hope and affirmation, has become a party of negativism, a party whose leadership has changed it from the party of ‘yes’ to the party of ‘no’ —’no’ to the balanced budget amendment and the line-item veto, ‘no’ to holding down taxes and spending, ‘no’ to the death penalty and the school prayer amendment, ‘no’ to adequate defense spending and a Strategic Defense Initiative. The American people are beginning to understand that in all these ways the liberal leadership has been saying no to them... The public is beginning to realize that this election is a referendum on liberalism.” —Ronald Reagan
