President’s Message:

Before I get into my sermon regarding the fund raiser, let me tell everyone that we raised some money rather quickly last Saturday night. A friend, David Bradfield, is marketing Casa Bay, a small subdivision on Hernandez Blvd. As part of his marketing, he allows charitable groups to park cars on the property and the group gets to keep all the money raised. Last Saturday, the following members helped in the endeavor: Jack Thompson, Jerry Saia, Lou Nester, Richard Welty, Mitch Hall, Tim Chiu, and your hard working Prez raised $355 in less than two hours. Thanks to one and all, and especially thanks to Dave for thinking about us. By the by, we were parking cars for the show at the amphitheater.

The time is drawing very close for our big fund raiser, the pancake breakfast, which is coming up this month, more specifically on the 19th of September. I’ll be reminding you of this until the event is over. We have handed out the sheets to be used to get the ads for the placemats. Selling tickets is fine, and pays for the costs we incur. However, the sale of the ads is where we make the profit that allows us to do the various projects for the community. So please, please, please, get out there and get your dry cleaner, your meat man, your hair stylist, your whatever to put some bucks up to place an ad on the placemats used at the breakfast. If you need any help, call me or Chief Hedges. We can show you how to place the ad in the placemat and explain anything to a prospect that you can’t explain. It is up to each and every member to help on this. Do not expect just a few members to do it all. Seriously, all you have to do is ask most of these people, and when they know it is for a good cause, they are happy to do it. It is a write-off for a business.

NEWS OF NOTE:

For those of you who do not live in St. Augustine, or do not receive a copy of The Record, I have attached the obituary for our long-time member, Bart Bartol. Many of you have joined our club since Bart went on Senior status, and did not have the joy of sharing life with Bart. You also did not get to attend baseball games with him and experience the thrill of driving with him to a Key Club meeting at Nease H. S. (Bart, the old Air Force pilot, was noted for driving as he did flying; that being pedal to the metal. He picked up speeding tickets in two successive years when we all trekked to Nease to meet with our Key Club.) I know the plans were in the works to get him to the annual banquet this year, as he was a Charter Member of this club, and those of us who served with him have missed hearing a good joke. Our condolences go out to his family. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Sept. 10, at St. Johns Family Funeral Home. Bart Bartol dead at 89, RIP

The Gators struggled, but pulled one out against Hard Hitting High School. Congrats you guys. I understand you have another top-ranked opponent set up to kick your butt this week. Good luck.

We installed Jack Thompson into our club last week. He is a chiropractor, and a brother of Jean and David. I’ll bet there are some more of the Thompson Clan that we can get into this club.

Bob Braden says we need to get busy on membership. We still need a couple more to stay even with our membership numbers from the beginning of the administrative year. Who have you invited to attend our meetings? We are making a good showing here toward the end of the administrative year, but we still a few more new members to make up to the attrition we have each year in membership.

Quotes You Can Use (or Not):

“Patriotism is a species of unity that has some redeeming moral and philosophical substance to it. In America, patriotism—as opposed to, say, nationalism—is a love for a creed, a dedication to what is best about the ‘American way.’ Nationalism, a romantic sensibility, says, ‘My country is always right.’ Patriots hope that their nation will make the right choice. If you read the speeches of leading Democrats before the Vietnam War, it’s amazing how comfortable they were with patriotic rhetoric... ‘Suicide’ might be strong, but the Left certainly amputated itself from full-throated patriotic sentiment. Most Democrats speak mellifluously about unity but get tongue-tied or sound as if they’re just delivering words plucked from a political consultant’s memo when they talk of patriotism... When Democrats do speak of patriotism, it is usually as a means of finding fault with Republicans, corporations or America itself. Hence the irony that questioning the patriotism of liberals is a grievous sin, but doing likewise to conservatives is fine... Better that our politics be an argument about why and how we should love our country, not about whether some do and some don’t.” —Jonah Goldberg

“How do you tell a Communist? Well, it’s someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It’s someone who understands Marx and Lenin.” —Ronald Reagan
